It is about collaborative and remote sharing
of machines and equipment using high bandwidth networks. For example,
users can remotely login, operate and use other consortium members'
machines and equipment for the purpose of training and teaching.
This is highly advantageous because machines are normally expensive
and seldom fully utilised. By sharing them, students have a wider
range of machines to use. In the new ICT-rich environment, students
also need to learn how to work collaboratively using the Internet.
RESONATE is one approach to encourage such a move. The project also
has far-reaching industrial significances as the impact of being
able to share machines is likely to enable huge cost savings.

Development of protocols for synchronous
and asynchronous collaborative environments for remote operation
of machines via the Internet or other media;
Research into technical aspects of using virtual
reality for engineering training; and
Sharing of equipment and machines for training
and research through the collaborative environments created.
